Carbon and nutrient stocks in roots of forests at different altitudes in the Ecuadorian Andes

چکیده
Carbon and nutrient stocks in below-ground biomass have rarely been investigated in tropical montane forests. Inthepresentstudy, theamountsofcarbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, potassium, calciumandmagnesium in root biomass were determined by soil coring and nutrient analysis in forests at three altitudes (1900, 2400 and 3000m) in the Ecuadorian Andes. Root biomass increased markedly from 2.8 kg m−2 at 1900m and 4.0 kg m−2 at 2400 to 6.8 kg m−2 at 3000m. The contribution of coarse roots (> 2mm in diameter) to total root biomass increased from about 70% at 1900m to about 80% at higher altitudes. In fine roots (≤ 2mm in diameter), concentrations of nutrients except calcium markedly decreased with altitude. Therefore, the nutrient stocks in fine roots were similar at 1900m and 3000m for nitrogen and sulphur, and were even lower at higher altitudes for phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. In coarse roots of Graffenrieda emarginata concentrations of nutrients were substantially lower than in fine roots, and were little affected by altitude. The data suggest that the importance of coarse roots for long-term carbon and nutrient accumulation in total plant biomass increases with increasing altitude.

Caspian Coastal Forests: Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Understory Vegetation
Moist and temperate Caspian forests are associated with a diversity of soil types and topography. Although, natural history and ecological attributes of the Caspian vegetation is well-documented, little is known about mycorrhizae of the Caspian (Hyrcanian) flora. Samples of herbaceous plant species were collected from 4 pre-determined altitudes (-13 upto about 1500m above sea level, appro...
متن کاملEstimation of biomass, carbon stocks and soil sequestration of Gowatr mangrove forests, Gulf of Oman
The mangrove forest ecosystem is known to possess a variety of ecosystem services, including high rates of carbon sequestration, storage and mitigating climate change through reduced deforestation. This study was carried out in the mangrove forests of Gowatr Bay, Gulf of Oman during 2017-18 to quantify biomass and carbon stocks of all components of this forest, including live and dead trees, so...
متن کاملEvaluation and Comparison of Performance of some Mechanical Control Methods for Yellow Mistletoe (Loranthus europaeus Jacq.) at Different Altitudes (Case study: Oak forests of Hyanan, Ilam)
Yellow mistletoe is a semi-parasite plant lives in the Zagros forests on Persian oak trees. Mechanical control is one of the basic acts to manage yellow mistletoe contamination. This research aimed to evaluate the performance of mechanical methods; wood-glue, clay, black plastic, natural color and control treatment to control yellow mistletoe at different altitudes and selecting the most sui...
متن کاملCorrection: Ecuador's Mangrove Forest Carbon Stocks: A Spatiotemporal Analysis of Living Carbon Holdings and Their Depletion since the Advent of Commercial Aquaculture
In this paper we estimate the living carbon lost from Ecuador's mangrove forests since the advent of export-focused shrimp aquaculture. We use remote sensing techniques to delineate the extent of mangroves and aquaculture at approximately decadal periods since the arrival of aquaculture in each Ecuadorian estuary. We then spatiotemporally calculate the carbon values of the mangrove forests and ...
متن کاملThe dangers of carbon-centric conservation for biodiversity: a case study in the Andes
Carbon-centric conservation strategies such as the United Nation’s program to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+), are expected to simultaneously reduce net global CO2 emissions and mitigate species extinctions in regions with high endemism and diversity, such as the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot. Using data from the northern Andes, we show, however, that carbo...
